Attention everybody!
I don't feel like posting the same thing on two separate blogs each week, so I am hereby moving my operation to tumblr (http://michaelhirshon.tumblr.com) because it's a lot more conducive to sharing and people seeing my work.

Please, I urge you all to follow me there instead! It will be the same content and it will look the exact same. You can put the RSS feed (http://michaelhirshon.tumblr.com/rss) into whatever blog aggregator you use -- if that's your thing.

This blogspot blog has been good to me these last 5 years, but it's time to make things a little bit more efficient. I really appreciate you following me all this time, and it would be great to see you again on the tumblr side!

Here's a piece I did for the new Grantland Quarterly -- it seems like a sequel illustration to an illustration I did before, despite it being about a different sport. I think I'm their go-to concussion guy. Specifically, this article is about the NFL silencing a large amount of concern over safety with a large cash settlement. You can read Charles Pierce's article, here. AD: Juliet Litman
Here's a portrait of Martin Luther King Jr. I did for Time Out New York; pretty straightforward.
Finished out 2013 with a very fun assignment -- a commission to do a family portrait. Normally, doing a family portraits would sound terrible (likenesses, stuffy smiles, sweaters, etc), but in this case it sounded amazing. Phrases like "my head but with a robot body and koala ears", "the ghost of my dead cat", and "my baby riding my new cat like it's Falcor" made this a project that I couldn't pass up.

It's about a directionless, twenty-something Korean girl who doesn't know what she wants out of life. My illustration depicts an incident where she buys some apples from a roadside vendor and imagines herself living out a simple, happy existence selling fruit.

Below is a mixture of life drawings of the readers/listeners, and my imaginings of the night's reading (which was a hundred pages of jealous ramblings and ruminating on an unfaithful woman). Overall it was a good time, and I was rewarded with more Moleskine sketchbooks than I'll be able to fill in a decade!
I was contacted by an agency who handles the art direction for multiple magazines. I was told the illustration was for an article about teachers who are resist change in the classroom. That's it. I have no idea when this was published or where it was published, and many attempts to find out how have yielded no information whatsoever. I can't complain, though; it was an enjoyable project and I was treated fairly. Still, part of me wonders if this illustration was for something top secret...
I'm excited to announce that the first of my covers hit the shelves (well, the online shelves) today. If you're interested, you can find it here.

The cover is for a short story called The Bones, by Bridget Clerkin. It follows a narrator who learns of her cousin's disquieting activities on the news. She reminisces about her childhood, and the troubling, psychopathic symptoms her cousin exhibited during a summer visit.
I had a great time doing this massive poster for OUYA Games, a new video game console company. I was chosen to work on the poster for The Amazing Frog? a crazy game where you're a frog running around a city, playing with physics as you jump off buildings, bounce up to blimps, and and free fall all over the place. Looks like a lot of fun.

My friend Francisco Cantu just published a three-part piece in Guernica Magazine about African immigration issues in the Netherlands. It's a story that doesn't really get any coverage outside of the Netherlands -- but there are many interesting parallels with immigration issues here in the US. The piece is a collage of interviews, newspaper clippings, and other documentary elements.

Parts 2 and 3 of the story are furnished with some illustrations I'd done earlier in the year. I created a new piece for the first part, showing the intense interview process and the feelings of paranoia and anxiety that go with it. As somebody who struggled with the Dutch immigration services last year (though to a much, much lesser degree), working on the illustration brought back some memories of talking to stern people and waiting endless months for a residence permit.

The article talks about personal histories and how many of Detroit's citizens have lost the will to be part of any solution because all of the places that were once special to them, and to their families, are now gone or dilapidated. With nothing to root them to their home, these people have no reason to stay and find comfort in the suburbs. The point is a good one, and describes a problem that many cities are facing (including my old stomping grounds, St. Louis).
Here's a quick drawing to pass the time:
A couple of fun pieces for Institutional Investor magazine. Once again, the point of this assignment was to take a dry article, so technical I can't understand it, and make something colorful. In assignments like these, it's common to work from summaries instead of from the actual article. Normally I don't like working that way, but I'll choose a summary over financial jargon any day. It doesn't hurt that the editors at II are great at summarizing, too.

This article was about the formation of a new credit rating company from a few different rating agencies around the world. The point is to offer a new outlook, one that goes beyond the standard "New York City perspective" which has failed so many times in recent memory.

This article was about increased oversight on cartels (scheming, price-fixing collusion in the marketplace).

It explained how Cisco was able to increase its attendance by making the conference available via mobile devices. In the end, half the attendees physically showed up at the event, while the other half was able to participate through a special mobile interface. This illustration spanned the opening spread and fit between the paragraph blocks.

In 2013, Amsterdam in the spring was much like Amsterdam in the winter. Cold, windy, humid, rainy, generally unpleasant. Every Dutch person told us this was the longest winter they’d ever had — typically, spring is a lovely time in The Netherlands. Bike through the countryside and you will be treated to an idyllic scene, one full of windmills and a mosaic of colorful tulips. The nation is famous for its tulips, after all, and they take the bulbs very seriously.
However, come April there were still no signs of tulips. As a flower, I’d imagine it would be difficult to grow in near freezing temperatures. The gardens of Keukenhoff, a beautiful display of horticultural engineering and a national treasure, open only a few shorts months every year, sat half barren for most of this short window. But now I’m starting to sound sour and cynical. I suppose there were a few nice days in spring — days when I could bike through the city without my heavy winter coat.
These days afforded me plenty of opportunities to experience the many indoor pleasures of the city. For instance, the reopening of the Rijksmuseum after ten long years of renovation was a highlight for the city. One night, the National Youth Jazz Orchestra provided a lively respite from the cold.

Overall, things could have been worse, as I learned when I was taken to an old church serving as a winter shelter for hundreds of African refugees. The church had been set up for the winter, but it was March and the refugees were supposed to leave…even though it still felt like winter. They woke with constant uncertainty and slept under the threat of being tossed out into the cold amidst the endlessly complicated asylum process. My visit came on the day before an organized protest. The refugees planned to march through the Museumplein, rebuking the Netherlands’ stringent immigration policies. Various friends and volunteers came by to help make signs.
Technically, I did not get to experience spring in Amsterdam. It wasn’t until mid-June that I was finally able to retire my heavy jacket. But while spring was lost, summer had come, and it kind of felt like the spring I was used to. These beautiful 75 degree days quickly turned that unending winter into an unpleasant memory.

In St. Louis, I’d grown accustomed to spending summers in a 100 degree cesspool of humidity. I would dread going outside and take many showers each day. Here, I forgot air conditioning even existing. As if to apologize for the winter, every July day was perfect. The Netherlands were spared from the heat waves that scorched much of Europe and the United States. Walking around, the city was a new place.
This site is the brainchild of Chid Liberty, a man trying to make fair-trade manufacturing take off in Africa. The purpose of the image was to depict a narrative that at once showed Africa was capable of producing quality goods in favorable working conditions (and contrast that with Asia, which is known for having terrible working conditions). This image became the banner of the website.
Liberty & Justice is a great idea, executed wonderfully -- I wish the best of luck to Chid and the people at Yoxi! I've been traveling a whole lot, lately, and it's kind of thrown a wrench in my productivity. Over a period of two weeks, I've been averaging a new place every other day. Amsterdam, Keflavik, Boston, NYC, Chicago, St. Louis...it's a whirlwind tour. A lot of time spent in the airport, unfortunately...

I recently illustrated the cover story of The Washington Post's Health & Science section -- it was a really great article about a rabbi's illness and brush with death; multiple strokes would tear his perceptions apart. While prepping for surgery, he had a major stroke and... well, I won't spoil it. You should read the article here. He muses on life and death and other thoughts.

It was a tight deadline and I had to finish it up on my first night of vacation, from a tiny, un-air-conditioned room in Split, Croatia. I thought my computer was going to melt. AD: Lisa Schreiber and Heather Barber
